Dewberry Farm, Brookshire TX

November 22, 2007 | Kid Brag | Comments [1]

We recently spent the day at Dewberry Farm, a kid-fashioned pumpkin farm about a 15-minute drive from our house, and had a fun time! The cub scouts held their pack meeting there (Isaiah received his Bobcat pin), and then the kids played and played and played. They have everything from pedal cars to hayrides to a corn maze, and a little bit of everything else in between. Anyway, we had a fun time and I thought I’d share a couple of pics with you. FYI – Isaiah’s the one in uniform-duh! (age 8), Ethan’s wearing his Giants shirt (7), and Amaya’s in pink (5).

BTW, I hope everyone has enjoyed their Thanksgiving Day and had plenty to eat! We sure did!! Love, Nancy

Kids on the loose!

The reality of Luis Benjamin working two jobs has finally set in.  Last night, when I was reading books to Lily (and thought little Ben was in the room listening), I ran into the kitchen to discover lil’ Ben had emptied the bottle of olive oil into our junk drawer.  Then tonight, Lily got a bloody nose from doing gymnastics on the couch cushion fort they had made in the living room.  Keeping my sanity has been difficult (and expensive from all the ibuprofen I have to take :) ), but then we were singing primary songs together to go to sleep.  They are precious.  By the way, Lily bravely did her solo. She did forget the words to the second line, and we hadn’t practiced that part because I didn’t know she sang it too.  But she had her speaking part memorized and rattled it off with Pagan perfection.  She has also become the example in her gymnastics class for the smaller children and is learning to read.  Benjamin talks more and more everyday and is learning to clean up and do chores (hopefully). we recently went to my grandma’s in St. Louis and he played with the farm kittens non-stop. He justs hugs and kisses them.

love you all, Julie

Thanks, Lainie

What a beautiful bunch of posterity I have produced from my sagging, aging loins.  Buddy, for a moment, I thought you were your father.  You look more like him with each passing year.  Of course, I get a good look at Jacob, that I missed in October.

And Cute Ethan, growing out of cute and into handsome, and Adam-Michael with his killer dimples.  How about that football uniform!  I can’t wait to hear how badly the Bengals beat the (I forgot their opponents, but who cares, they’re going to be toast).  Lanie Beth looks more like Melissa everyday.  Lainie, you look just wonderful, and Bailey is adorable.  I wish I could have a professional photo of her.  How about going to Wal-Mart and have a quick cheap one made?  It would be well worth the trip.

Bengal Champions

November 10, 2007 | Kid Brag | No Comments

adam-with-his-trophey.jpg

Had to put this here:

Bengals 19- Falcons 0

Lainie, Bailey, Ethan, Jacob, Allie, Melissa and I went to see Adam-Michael’s championship game and we were NOT disappointed. The Falcons talked smack about really having already been the champs after their last playoff game on the Monday by beating the Saints 7-6. They thought since they had already beat us earlier in the season 23-16 that this game was just a formality.

We kicked off to them and within 7 plays we intercepted one of their precious Tight end passes and ran it back for a touchdown 7-0. 2nd quarter, Roman Verciglio on a quarterback sneak for a 13-0 lead and in the third, Marlon Humphrey shut the door with a Tailback toss to make it 19-0. Coach Humphrey was so proud that after his Heisman Nominations, his high draft pick and 4 wonderful seasons in the NFL (along with a super bowl) his first championship was as his son’s Coach. THAT is a wonderfully teary story.

We had Adam’s banquet tonight. Adam got his trophy and was voted ‘tough guy’ of the 2007 Bengals squad. No matter what happens for the rest of these young boys lives, they will know the feeling of being the BEST at something for one shining moment as long as they live.

Special thanks to Lainie for the WONDERFUL photography:)

Ikey Gets The Gold

November 7, 2007 | Kid Brag | Comments [4]

Well, a plastic, gold-painted trophy identical to about a hundred other such handed out by the Katy National Little League at the end of this “Fall Ball” season, anyway!

Actually, Isaiah is coming along. This was the first season where official scores began to be kept, and his team won nine of their games and lost only two. Isaiah averaged at least one hit in each game, and drove in a few runs. He (and most of his teammates) have a lot to learn about fielding, but even there they’re making progress! Isaiah actually had two or three put-outs playing in the infield.

Bengals playoff vs the 49ers…

November 6, 2007 | Kid Brag | Comments [2]

Coach Bobby Humphrey said… “Boys, I have been to the Super Bowl as a Denver Bronco. We didn’t get it done but it was MAGIC being there. That Super Bowl was against the 49ers. We are playing the 49ers tonight and it sure would make me feel good to be going to another championship 1 Hour from now!”

The Niners had lost 3 regular season games but had been scheduled to play 2 of those teams again and came back the 2nd time to handily beat the Saints and then the Falcons. The only team they had not had a victory against was this Bengal squad. They were determined as though it were their destiny to win this playoff against those scruffy Bengals and go on to the championship game on Saturday!!!

With that, the Bengals took the field and kicked off to a MUCH improved 49ers team. The Bengal’s first kickoff looked like a squibbed onside kick… surely it was an accident

In the first quarter, despite good field position for the Niners,  the Monster defense of the Bengals shut down the outside to the 49ers thanks to the shrewed body checking of their corners Blake Grey and Adam Polhemus, two of the shortest cornerbacks in the league whose combined weight didn’t even top 160 lbs. The Bengals took the ball back on downs and marched to the 7 yard line where Marlon Humphrey glided in off left tackle. The extra point was good and the Bengals wen up 7-0. Dylan Ackerson was not on his A-Game as a kicker tonight. Where he usually averaged 30+ yards a kickoff, the stocky 105 lb lineman squibbed the opening kick and now his 2nd kick went barely 10 yards. Once again the Niners had good field position at midfield. The Bengals defense could have cared less. Though the Niners were able to get to the 3 yard line, a costly hold brought them back out to the 15 and the ball went over on downs. The Bengals took a precision attempt and as the first quarter rolled down, they made it into the endzone on another Quarterback sweep by Roman Virciglio. No point after this time… an offsides made it impossible to cover the distance and the 2nd quarter began 13-0.

2nd string quarterback Griffin Selby is a tall lanky boy that prefers music and reading to sports but has a wonderful arm. He knew the 2nd quarter was always his so he practiced passing while watching from the sidelines. The 49ers made it tense as they pulled into the endzone on a well executed cross dive from a shotgun T formation. Their extra point was good and 13-7 was now the score. Grif brought his 2nd quarter team out to the field. Since most skilled players in the backfield must rotate out of that position for 1 quarter every game, Grif had a sturdy but 2nd string backfield to work with. He worked the middle for 2 downs and then promptly threw an interception and hung his head as he walked off the field. Within 7 plays, the Animal defense of the Bengals handed the ball back to Grif. He took his offense down to midfield and threw another long bomb that was picked off by the Niners. The 49ers still couldn’t score since defensive end Conner O’Brien decided the backfield was now his domain and hit them for 3 losses in that series. Grif came slowly back on the field a little happier. At least this time he had some hope. Coach Humphrey substituted Marlon in at wide receiver and gave Grif 2 of the best blockers in the backfield. “Just throw the ball as far as you can, Grif!” said Coach Humphrey, “I promise Marlon will get under it.” So Grif did as the coach urged and BAM! 45 yard touchdown pass to Marlon Humphrey. The Bengals 1st touchdown pass of the year. No extra point but it was now 19-7 going into Halftime. Grif now held the team record for most interceptions and most touchdowns.

3rd quarter was a battle but the Niners were determined to make up the deficit. They found the endzone again to bring the score to 19-14 and were on top of the world. They saw the victory within grasp. One more TD and they would have proven their stars had changed.

So much can change from a simple kickoff of course. Their kicker finally got his foot into it and it flew 35 yards straight to a baffled, tall, skinny kickoff return runner who hadn’t had a game kickoff put in his arms all season.

You see, Dylan Ackerson is the Bengals kicker and the best in the league. Since he kicks so well, Bengal Kickoff practices force their receivers to line up deep and as such; all the season games with less proficient kickers saw the kickoffs in the arms of the closer players. This time the ball went right to the deep man’s surprised arms. Unfortunately for the Niners, those skinny arms belonged to none other than Marlon Humphrey and he knew JUST what to do with a football tucked into his arm. ALL the way down the sideline for a touchdown. NO extra point but now it was 25-14.

4th quarter was nothing but time management and AMAZING stops by the defense… The 49ers would get close but be denied, as though the Bengal defense would just dangle the endzone right in front of them like a tiger playing with it’s prey and just pull it away with astounding tackles like a smooth rug on a polished hardwood floor. As the clock ticked off to zero, coach Humphrey raised his hands to the fans as if saying, “I get to be at another Super Bowl… this time we’re getting that trophy!”

Bengals vs Falcons 12 noon, November 9, Hoover Central Field.

Lainie & Bailey will be there… wish you could come!

Lily’s solo debut!

November 4, 2007 | Kid Brag | Comments [3]

Lily gets to start the entire sacrament meeting presentation next week by singing the first line of “I’m trying to be like Jesus” all by herself.  All the teachers and leaders keep commenting on how adorable, sweet, and brave she is (which of course being her mother, I know it all to be true!)  Can’t wait to see her and hope she doesn’t get nervous in front of her family and an audience.

Love, Julie

Bengals continue the carnage

October 17, 2007 | Kid Brag | No Comments

Tuesday night, Hoover East football stadium. Cool breeze and the smell of chili-cheese nachos, hot dogs and grass rubbed around on a fresh patent leather pigskin football. That is football. Around here the best announcers have a tinge of Southern Baptist fire and brimstone preaching in their voices and tonight was no exception.

The Bengals took the field to stretch their record to 5-1. Still smarting from the loss 2 weeks ago to the Falcons and feeling more competent with their victory over the Saints, they focussed their anxieties on the Panthers… a team they had shutout in their first game 12-0. The Panthers had improved though just like all the other teams in their conference. They boasted a huge front line of 11 year olds headed up by one of Adam-Michael ’s close schoolmates ‘Caleb’. 5′6″ and 208 pounds of offensive and defensive tackle. YES! He IS that large.

Running up the middle was near impossible on offense, and on defense… holding the Panther’s running backs to less than 3 yards a carry when they pushed over the back of the 6th grade behemoth was a feat similar to surviving a Fat Albert attack in a championship Buck Buck game. Yet the Bengals did hang on.

In the second quarter, Roman Virciglio handed off to the fleet-footed Marlon Humphrey for a routine off-tackle jaunt to the left (yes, opposite Caleb’s position) and he cut outside for a 55 yard touchdown run. They held us for the extra point. No more scores until the 4th quarter where we decided passing might be fun for a change. Roman threw an out pattern pass to Tyler Duffey for a 15 yard gain and 2 plays later he found Marlon wide open on a post pattern for another 25 yard touchdown… again no extra point.

We kicked off and recovered the ball immediately. Then, our very first play after winning a kickoff prize, we coughed a fumble right back to them.

Well the Panthers got inspired. Eyeing our Monster defense with so many people on the line and realizing that we could pass on them, they threw a pass of their own over the left corner and scored on a combo 65 yard pass and run.

[I must stop here to interject that Adam-Michael was on the bench during that series since they have to rotate out their players and he was completely furious that he couldn't be in there to intercept that pass:).]

The Panthers were elated. It was now only 12-6. They had a chance until… until…

Yes folks, the onside kick they attempted was futile. Griffin Selby fell on it immediately and with 1 minute left in the game, Marlon Humphrey cut back up field from a left toss to nail the coffin shut. Virciglio ran in the extra point and the Bengals bowed to the crowd with a 19-6 victory.

The Steelers are next and over 10 days away… stay tuned!

Good Looking kids

October 16, 2007 | Kid Brag | Comments [1]

Bill observes that I may have blundered when I said Lainie had the prettiest face and hair of any of my girls.  Lainie was quick to point out to Bill that I said “girls” and of course, we all know that Bill has the prettiest face and hair of all!!  Let me see if I can ease out of this.

Somehow, I was blessed with nine absolutely beautiful and adorable babies.  I have the photographs to prove it.   By the time all of you reached your twenties and thirties, you were good-looking.  Bill did have really good hair, and a cute face.

Bill, I meant to tell you before I left that you are VERY good-looking now.  You look different somehow.  Your teeth?  Your hair is just beautiful.  You have glided very gracefully into your fifties.  You do, in fact, look better than I have ever seen you since you were a little boy.

Buddy, naturally, had an attribute that he and he alone was given.  The Lord knew I would be nuts over dimples, and so He gave Buddy one from his Uncle Alex, and one from his Uncle Buddy, inasmuch as they only had one each.  Buddy had a perfect physique.  Not just from dancing, but naturally.  He reminded me so much of my Uncle Frank.  In fact, I have a photograph of my Uncle Frank just before he went overseas in WWII, and Buddy favors him very much.

Lainie has always had the pretty hair and face. She was so very beautiful as a young woman.

Beth has the gorgeous figure and pretty legs.  She also has very beautiful eyes.

Brenda was the prettiest little teenager I ever laid my eyes on.  I could hardly believe she was mine, except I knew that she was Peurto Rican through and through.  She has the prettiest olive skin, and lovely dark hair.

Tony was such a perfect-looking baby.  just the cutest little thing in the world.  Tony was and is just plain good-looking.  His best feature is his beautiful legs.  I mean really pretty.  Buddy, too.

But Carmen.  She wins the leg contest.  Without a doubt, I have never seen such beautiful legs anywhere.  And of course, she was a dazzeller, too, in her earlier years.  She’s so pretty now, when she dresses up, and her hair is healthy and shiny and thank goodness she gets it from the Hispanic genes in her.

Ben leaned way toward the Hispanic side, and I was shocked when his Patriarchal Blessing said he was from Ephraim.  I really expected his lineage to be from Manassah.  His hair has turned black, black, BLACK!!  It’s so pretty, and I can tell he won’t go bald, either.  None of my boys will be bald, except Tony, who is bald by choice.  Ben has the fabulous legs.  Absolutely beautiful.  They are identical to Tony’s.  Where do all of these beautiful legs come from?  Even on the boys?  Luis is bow-legged.  My legs were pretty, but they were short, not long and lithe, like Carmen and Maria, and Beth.

And then Maria, who has the prettiest eyes of all.  Green!  Her hair is also healthy and shiny and pretty, and she has such a pretty slendar figure, and pretty legs.  Yes, there’s those legs again.

Where did all of you come from?  Where?  On top of the looks have the amazing talents.

Bill, did I make it worse, or did I wiggle out?

OK Football Fans! Bengals vs undefeated Saints?

October 10, 2007 | Kid Brag | No Comments

The Bengal’s defeat last week by the Falcons was a sobering affair. The week’s practice was nothing less than a Lombardi spring training camp. Block, Tackle and more blocking and tackling. No time spent on offense or special teams.

Sunday the coaches called a film practice to go over video of our last 2 games. The players were amazed at who the real standouts were. Not the boys with the big mouths and personality but some of the smallest and quietest players on the team. Coach Humphrey initiated a new ‘Monster’ defense with a 6 man line, 2 linebackers, 2 cornerbacks and 1 free safety, all moved much closer to the line. The Saints were known for their running game and their sweeps and the Bengals were going to meet them up close and personal. Adam at cornerback was going to have to be SUPER on his toes and take care of ANYTHING attempting to come around his right corner.

I dropped Adam off at the field Tuesday night and told him to do his best while I went to pick up Jacob from Band practice. When I returned at halftime, Melissa met me at the field and the score was 0-0.

The Saints took the ball in the 3rd quarter and made no progress and punted. The Bengals 3rd down from a Tebow style shotgun took Marlon Humphrey into the end zone on a left sweep for 30 yards. There was holding on the point after so Marlon had to plow it in from 5 yards back for the extra point.

Our defense was amazing. Denied, denied, denied! The Saints only made 3 first downs the entire game. Our offensive time of possession would have been the envy of the NFL. We simply ran the clock down until they had 11 seconds to try and score from their own 15 yard line.

Two incomplete passes later, we were celebrating in the end zone. Bengals win 7-0. Our 4th shutout. This could win us the bye for the playoffs in 2 weeks even though the top 3 teams are all 4-1.

We play the Panthers again next week and then the Steelers again (we lucked drawing the 2 teams we have already shut out for the end of our schedule). Then on to the playoffs!!!!!!

Bengals fall to Falcons 23-16

October 3, 2007 | Kid Brag | Comments [7]

Disappointing Defeat 10/2. Bengals are now 3-1
Adam only played 1.5 quarters. The Falcons had our number most of the night.

Adam had been sick over the weekend and only watched practice before the game. Melissa couldn’t make the game since she had to do all the prep for Allie’s Birthday… we’ve decided she can’t miss another one since she is probably the ingredient that made for all their wins (I take him to all Practices, she must make it to all Games)

Big one against the Saints coming up on Tuesday next to stay in the playoff running. Saints are the only undefeated team and only beat the Falcons by 1 point.

At least we got home for Allie’s Birthday and her new DOG (Chinese Crested Powder Puff) named Ginger.
