Halloween pics and request for addresses

November 14, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [2]

I tried to post some photos. I don’t think it worked. Can someone write the directions on how to do it successfully?
And can everyone who has moved recently post their addresses so we may send you holiday greetings! Love, Julie

Janie Had Her Baby

September 23, 2008 | Kid Brag | No Comments

Born:  September 22nd….11:11 P. M. ……6lbs. 8 0z. …….Mother and baby doing fine.  Well, Jani had some problems, after 26 hours of labor.  Something inside “split”, and they had to take her back to delivery, and sew it up, and she was in excruciating pain.  They loaded her up on pain medication, and she still got little sleep.

Carmen and I went up this afternoon, and took her a lot of things that she needed.  She had a hard knot in her tummy, and she worried and worried over it.

The baby is adorable.  Lots of black hair…and he just looks like most newborns do.  Very red, with a red birthmark in the middle of his forehead, that is, between his nose, exactly where Bill’s was.  His skin is pretty, otherwise.  Jani is nursing him, and he doesn’t seem very interested yet, but maybe Crystal can give her some advice about that.  I don’t know what to say.  A new mother has to work a lot with newborns, who don’t seem to get the idea at first.

His name is Tristan James Kopman.

It’s A First-Grade Hoedown

April 19, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [5]

This is Grandson Ethan’s First Grade program at Woodcreek Elementary School last month. The video’s pretty good (they get professionals to do these now - I swear, this is going to be the most photo- and videographed generation in history).

Ethan is (once again) on the far right in each scene. He’s one of the three kids in the opening scene, on the rightmost microphone, and he’s on the far right in the “chorus” as well.

How Much Is That Doggie On The Far Right?

April 19, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [6]

This is from Amaya’s dance recital in May 2007. It’s amazing how much she has grown in nearly a year!

Anyway, appropriate for her family, Amaya is the little doggie on the very far right in this video.

Enjoy!

Family Fun Day at Shades Mountain

April 14, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [2]

We had a great time with Bailey again this month. Jacob was unable to be with us this time. He got his first job working at Domino’s Pizza on the phones and had to work that day (he is saving up for a Gibson SG3 guitar which he Badly wants). Poor Lainie can hardly ever get a decent day off of work. She was able to be off at 2:30 on Saturday and we were planning to have a cookout at my house and then spend the evening playing badminton. Unfortunately Grady Gibbons 50th HS Reunion was the same night and he had to leave by 6:30 so it looked as though we might have only had a couple of hours to get together. However, Melissa called to tell me that Ethan’s Elementary school was having their Family Fun day and silent auction that afternoon and we have not missed one since Allie was in kindergarten 11 years ago. I called Lainie and we met at Melissa’s house and went on to the FFD. Farling was home to watch Bailey for the evening so we didn’t have to have Bailey back until 7 or so. We had a blast. Cake walks, inflatable fun rides, cotton Candy and of course the yearly ‘Silent’ auction (All proceeds go to the school) that Melissa uses to get bargains on the summer activities for the kids.

Allie is the MASTER of the Cake Walk. Every year she never has to enter more than 2-3 times before she gets a cake for her Mom and the younger boys.

Melissa, on the other hand,  stays in the auction room for a couple of hours and peruses the items she feels are requisite that the kids will need and systematically watches the rising of the bids until the last 60 seconds, whereupon she releases the folks she has drafted to put in the last bids and secure her items (this year it was only me). There were only 2 MUSTS this year. A Workout boot camp for her and the ‘Camp Cosby’ week for the 2 younger boys. For the boot camp I got the bid in in the last 15 seconds and paid $80 for the $210 item. The Camp Cosby was listed for $1500 (believe me that is realistic as I coughed up the funds for it last year). She got the bid in for $625. Her method is simple, walk over to the item in the last 15 seconds, slowly write down your number and bid and walk away WITH the pen as the clock ticks down 3…2…1! She has infuriated a dozen people over the years but has gotten her main item of interest every time.

Lainie even bid on and WON a watch for $15…. she called me when she got home to let me know that the watch didn’t even work:) I thanked her for donating the $15 to Ethan’s school and reminded her to write it off on her taxes next year.

KNLL Rookie 7 Astros @ Giants 04/08/2008

April 8, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [8]

On the way to the ballpark, Ethan said On the way to the ballpark, Ethan said “oh, I hope they don’t make me be catcher! I hate playing catcher, ’cause the glove is too big!”

And so of course:

Ethan Catching vs. Astros 04/08/2008

END OF FIRST INNING:

Astros 0 2 0
Giants 0 2 0

(I have to speak to our coach/Ward First Counselor about this. I know the coach’s prerogative is that “coaches kids bat high in the order,” but that’s not actually fair since over the course of the season, if you have kids batting consistently higher in the order vs. lower, those higher will get more total at-bats. And [SMUG WARNING*SMUG WARNING*SMUG WARNING] Ethan is just TOO GOOD a hitter to be “robbed” of those at-bats!)

END OF SECOND INNING:

Astros 0 2 1
Giant 1 4 0

Ethan struck out.

END OF THIRD INNING:

Astros 0 3 2
Giants 3 7 0

(Ethan’s getting to where he catches about every other ball fair and square, and stops almost all the othes. Great throwing arm, too - Oh, he just grabbed a little dribbler in front of the plate and almost threw out the runner on First!)

FOURTH INNING (FINAL):

Astros 5 11 2 (Inning Ended w/Max. 5 runs)
Giants 3 8 0 (Ethan Struck Out)

(Ethan got clipped on the shoulder by a pitch - the machine’s mostly “throwing” inside to Righties - but he’s toughin’ it out!)

Test Posting of Photos UPDATE: IT’S A BUG! UPDATE 2: FIXED!

April 8, 2008 | Kid Brag, Meta | Comments [2]

UPDATE: 04/08/2008

The problem was an incompatibility between the WordPress software (which is PHP-based — Beth, Buddy and/or Ben can tell you more about it than I can, although *ahem* guess who figured out the fix?) and the Apache web server software that the hosting service runs. There’s a “plug-in” or “mod” for Apache called mod_security that helps make sure bad stuff doesn’t happen to your website. I had to apply a little work-around script describe ON THIS PAGE, and *voila!* everything now seems to work.

ORIGINAL:
Lainie, I also tried to post, but got an error. That may not be the fault of the software, but of the website. I’ll try again later and see what I can discover. UPDATE 04/08/2008 3:40 PM CDT Okay, it looks like it’s a bug in the new version of WordPress, the software that powers the blog. One workaround appears to be using Internet Explorer instead of Firefox. Lainie, I’m not sure which you’re using, but according to the Support Forum, some report that the pictures DO upload, but there is an error message anyway. I’ll try it using IE in just a little while, and see what happens.

Maddie B. and Amaya K.

OKAY, OBVIOUSLY I FIGURED OUT A WORKAROUND. I’LL GET LAINIE’S PICTURES FIXED, TOO.

BTW, the above are Maddie Bounds, Amaya’s friend from Church, Left, and Amaya herself, about to go onstage to do their “Doggie In The Window” number in their Dance recital last year.

BASEBALL SEASON IS HERE! (Katy National Little League Opening Day)

March 30, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [1]

Well, it has begun. For the next seven or eight weeks, we’ll be spending more than half our evenings “hanging out” at the ballpark, watching the Rookie 7 Giants (Ethan) and PeeWee 8 Dodgers (Isaiah) battling it out for Little League Baseball supremacy.

Yesterday was “Opening Day,” full of festivity, flag-waving, and lots of boring speeches (from the kids’ perspective). Only Ethan’s team, the Giants, coached by our Ward Bishopric’s First Counselor (and assisted by the PREVIOUS First Counselor), on which THREE of the nine players are “Mormons.” Isaiah’s Dodgers will have their first game on Monday against the Bulls (Little League has now begun using minor league team name and unis in addition to the majors, as I think MLB now charges an exhorbitant amount for licensing, so now you have the uniforms of teams like the Durham Bulls, Toledo Mudhens, Corpus Christi Hooks, Batavia Muckdogs, Carolina Mudcats, Lake Elsinore (CA) Storm, and the Salem-Keizer (OR) Volcanoes. It’s pretty colorful!)

Oh, and Ethan went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. He also had a putout at third base.

(Astros open at the Padres tomorrow!!!!)

Lily starts kindergarten

March 11, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [3]

<>Lily got a little nervous about kindergarten registration.  The night before she exclaimed, “I hate school, I am not going!”  Later she confessed she was just scared.  Of course, she instantly made a friend and saw her old friends so it was all good. She also scored over 90% in all categories at her screening. She will hopefully do jumpstart kindergarten during the month of June.  She is also quite the star of her little gymnastics class.   Love, Julie

Ben’s first art

March 11, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [3]

Benjamin started drawing this week, which amazes me because my family is not artistic like the Pagans. He is also having trouble adjusting to the time change as usual and can turn tears off and on like you would a faucet. He insisted on us going swimming today at the Y.  Oh, by the way, he declared this was a drawing of a bug.  The rest of his drawings include putting eyes and a mouth on everything, no matter if it’s a person or not.

Teyla and Scriptures

February 5, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [3]

teycup.jpgteyglasses.jpgscriptures.jpgHere is the picture of Teyla reading her scriptures.

The other picture is her with her new glasses.  She found them at Goodwill and wanted them because everyone else wears glasses but her (and Maria who could probably do with a pair).  They have a light red tint to them and make her look smart

They other pictures is just a typical Teyla with her cup.   When she is tired or drinking her cup she pulls her hair.  If you are sitting next to her or holding her, she will pull YOUR hair.

Karate Lessons

January 29, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [6]

Dylan is very excited about attending his first karate class tonight.  This morning he informed me that he had already been given some lessons during a school demonstration.  I asked him to show me a move that he learned.  He said, “Ok, Mommy, walk near me like you are going to get me”.  I proceeded to approach him and he stuck his hand straight out in a halting manner and announced in a very firm, commanding voice “Stop!  Don’t come near me Ranger!”

(you know how mean those Rangers can be…)

Maybe a little too much Harry Potter?

So, some time last week, Mom, Teyla and I were hanging out in the ‘office’. Teyla looked at the chandelier and thought there was a spider. When mom and I looked, there was no spider, however there could have been with so many cobwebs. So, we decided to clean the chandelier. Teyla immediately went and got the broom to try to sweep it. Well, I found the feather duster and told her we were going to use it instead since it would be easier and more effective. Teyla looked at the feather duster, looked at the broom looked at Nana, handed her the broom and said, “Go fly somewhere!”

Ryder and Dylan - Opposites Attract

January 18, 2008 | Kid Brag | Comments [5]

ryderdylanfireplace2.gifRyder and Dylan 1/17/08

I took these pics yesterday morning before school. 1/17/08

There could never be two more opposite children living under one roof than Ryder and Dylan. This morning, for instance, Ryder was not allowed to wear his school shirt until AFTER he ate his breakfast and brushed his teeth because otherwise his class would know what he had for breakfast and what brand of toothpaste he used. Ryder wears everything he eats or drinks and uses his shirt as a napkin. It saves time.

Dylan, on the other hand, had me spend 10 minutes working with his hairstyle in the mirror to ensure every strand was in place before leaving for school. He also refuses to wear a tabogan because it messes up his hair. His clothes are immaculate from morning until night. Never a smear or drop anywhere. He has always deplored having food or drink spilled on his clothing or getting his hands dirty.

As opposite as these two are, however, their relationship is so much like their uncles Buddy and Bill. Dylan IDOLIZES Ryder and as long as Dylan is quiet, doesn’t move and keeps his mouth shut then Ryder allows his little brother to hang out with him. And heaven help him if Dylan smacks his food around his big brother!!

Dewberry Farm, Brookshire TX

November 22, 2007 | Kid Brag | Comments [1]

We recently spent the day at Dewberry Farm, a kid-fashioned pumpkin farm about a 15-minute drive from our house, and had a fun time! The cub scouts held their pack meeting there (Isaiah received his Bobcat pin), and then the kids played and played and played. They have everything from pedal cars to hayrides to a corn maze, and a little bit of everything else in between. Anyway, we had a fun time and I thought I’d share a couple of pics with you. FYI - Isaiah’s the one in uniform-duh! (age 8), Ethan’s wearing his Giants shirt (7), and Amaya’s in pink (5).

BTW, I hope everyone has enjoyed their Thanksgiving Day and had plenty to eat! We sure did!! Love, Nancy
