Bud-Surprise Gift on the Way

December 17, 2007 | Birthdays | Comments [2]

It’s going to cost 100 times more to mail it than the little item itself cost.  I could send it back by Lainie, but there is a reason why I must get it to you as soon as possible.  You must take excellent care of it.  It must stay with you, and no one else….always.  Until you are ready to pass it on.  Love  MOM  PS  I held it in my hand a long time before I finally realized I must let it go.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CARMEN (Who will be mm-snf-mm-mm)

Visit from “Polly”

September 20, 2007 | Birthdays, Travels | No Comments

The Texas branch of the family was privileged to receive a visit from “Polly,” the title that we’ve given to William L. Polhemus Sr. He flew from B’ham just to spend the evening with us in honor of Bill, Jr.’s birthday, and then flew right back. As busy as he is, I must say I was very honored to have received such a wonderful gift.

I should mention that our grandchildren (formally, they’re “step-grandchildren” but as “Papa Luis” can attest, that distinction doesn’t mean a whole lot in certain instances), having met “Polly” a few times, are thoroughly in love with him. Everyone here that knows him, knows that he has that effect on children. Brenda used to be enthralled by him, in fact, when she was a little girl.

The Polhemus’ grandfather – “Polly’s” dad – married our grandmother when he was in his late 40s, and had four children with her. He died in 1962, and I am likely the only one of us four Polhemi that remembers him at all. Anyway, his nickname was always “Polly,” and so we have transferred that title to my bio-dad for the great-grandchildren’s sake. Since “Polly” is “only” 72 and in very good health, it may be that they will actually get to grow up knowing him.

Back to the visit: We went to a local steakhouse and had a great meal. At the end, “Polly” gave me an unexpected and quite breath-taking gift! A few years ago, he made a business load to me at interest, which I’ve been paying back for the past couple of years, but still have quite a ways to go.

He gave me a birthday card, and in it wrote “loan paid in full.” I cannot tell you what it means to us. I’m still rather speechless about it!

During our visit, we talked about long-lost cousins whom we have not seen in a long time, and it dawned on me that the Polhemus side (which isn’t as close as our Mom’s side of the family; believe me Mom, we do very well in that respect) has never even so much as TALKED about a family reunion. I think this is something that we ought to consider.

Beth, I think that you and our cousin Pam, who I believe lives in Birmingham if I’m not mistaken, would be PERFECT to organize such a thing. Let’s talk about it.

I didn’t want to take up too much time on the 1048 blog with this, since I know it’s of limited interest to the rest of you, but I do want to say that I’m thankful for my biological father, as well (of course) as “Papa Luis,” whom I still call “Dad.” I love both of them so much, although for different reasons, and I thank the Lord that as difficult as divorce can be on families, I have such sterling examples of “Dad-ness” as both my bio-dad and my sealed-for-eternity Dad.

Love to all.

Happy Birthday Bill. 50 years is nothing to be ashamed of… scared of, yes, but not ashamed. :)
Anyway, for those who might enjoy it, my first e-published work of fiction is here:

http://www.freewebs.com/farscapevirtualseason5eps4/v517.htm

None of which you will probably understand if you haven’t watched the series or read the rest of season 5.

This might help:

Either way, enjoy the dialog if you can.

A Son For Crystal and Jamey

September 16, 2007 | Birthdays | Comments [2]

We got an e-mail from Brenda last night.  I think the due date is in February, and if I’m not mistaken, that’s the month that Lexie was born. Anyway.  The catecory is appropriate, and congrats to Crystal, Jamey, Brenda and Darrell, and Christopher, and also Grandmother Pat!

MOM

I’ve thought about you all day

I’ve literally lived all of the summer of 1957 over again. The time spent with my parents before flying up to Aberdeen (my first flight ever!). And then Bill playing softball with the guys every afternoon, while all the girls sat on the sidelines, and talked about babies, because we were all pregnant, except one.  And then of course, the trip to the hospital.  I tried to wake Bill up, but he said he was too sleepy to go have a baby.  I finally got him on his feet, but sent him home pretty soon, because he was so edgy.  Yes, it was quite a summer, and got me a wonderful gift.   Happy Birthday to my firstborn child.  I love you so very, very much.  Fifty years later, I love you fifty times more.

I don’t know where the rest of your siblings got off to.   If it wasn’t midnight, I’d call them up and give them a piece of my mind, and a piece is all I have left.  Thanks to Bud for remembering.

Love  MOM

I can’t believe I am the first to wish BILL his ‘Happy Birthday’ on this site.

Half a century of detailed  ‘Life Analysis’ Lord Mom you were there just a couple of decades ago… Bill is catching up to you at Blinding Speed.

He that has a Why will come up with any How! …Nietsche

Bill has always had the ‘Why’.

When Suffering  has a purpose, it ceases to be suffering. …Frankl

Having meaning in your life and setting that example is what makes you the beloved Firstborn of this clan.

I love you , Bill

H.B. to Me!

(Well, maybe a DAY…)

Brenda Luisa Pagan Mathews turns forty-[mmmph!] today! Happy birthday, little sister!

It’s your day! You can do ANYTHING YOU WANT (here on the 1048 blog, at least).

N.B. I’m probably the only kid who remembers Brenda’s first day home from the hospital all those years ago. Ask Mother what I said when I saw here lying there in her bassinet!

Love, Bro. Bill
