Checking In – After Long Hiatus
July 1, 2009 | Check-in
My job search is going…well, nowhere at the moment.
This is the strangest job-hunting experience I’ve ever had. I’ve seen times in the past where there just don’t seem to be any jobs available, but that doesn’t seem to be the case this time – at least, judging by the advertisements, Internet listings, and even the cold-calling experiences that I’ve had.
But even as people aver that they are looking for someone to fill their positions, they just don’t seem particularly eager to do so anytime soon. LOTS of telephone conversations, lots of recruiters calling in response to my Monster.com resume, lots of positive responses from cold-calling, even. But it’s “well, we’ll get back to you real soon, we’re very interested.”
But they don’t get back to me, and they don’t seem to be nearly so interested as they say. When I follow up, I get “oh, yeah, we haven’t really had time to get to your application yet. If you don’t hear from us by next week, give us another call.”
“Summer doldrums,” indeed.

Bill, I have a good idea how you must feel. I deplore calling people that may not particularly want to hear from me. But…when you’re job hunting, you have to be aggressive. You already know that. You’re almost fifty-two years old (which is working against you in some cases…they want young, fresh-faced 25-year old minds full of mush…unfortunately) At least I suppose. WHAT DO I KNOW?! I’ve never done anything but serve tacos and enchiladas. Would it be feasible to say “Please tell me yay or nay right now, so I want waste your time or my time anymore. I’ll mark your name off my list, and not bother you again. Please, right now. Yes, you will hire me, or No, you will not. Just try it one time. Who cares. What can they say? If they say, “If you don’t hear from us by next week, give us another call,” after you say that. They you say, “I’ll take that as a ‘no’, and I’m marking you off my list. Good afternoon to you, Ma’m, or good morning to you, or whatever.
Aren’t you glad you have a mother, still living, who you can depend upon to give you good, sound, advice?
However, I think I’ll refer you to your father, Bill, Sr., who has had a little more experience in the business world than I have.

BTW….Welcome back from your long hiatus.
Jani wanted to know how she could get on this website. She wants to post some pictures of her baby. However, she is now living out in Nevada with her husband, and I hope somebody can show her how to operate the equipment. She’s sharp. I’m sure she’ll make friends fast. Her husband, Casey, already has friends.
Anyway, please invite her to join us, and give her a password, etc. Thank you.
I hope everything is well with you and Nancy. Do you have the children back, or are they still with Carol and her husband. Bring us up to date with that situation.
Luis and I are enjoying our house, all alone, just us! But we really do miss Jani and the baby. He’s such a cute little fellow, always smiling at everybody.
I’m especially glad we’re alone right now, because I had surgery on my right toe on Wednesday, and I just need everything to be peaceful and quiet.
Luis is such a wonderful caretaker. He gets a lot of extra brownie points for his ability in that area.
Love….MOM
