HAPPY BIRTHDAY AGAIN, BETH!!
February 16, 2009 | Uncategorized
Yes, it was a special day for Beth and me forty-six years ago today. She was born about 4:30 in the afternoon at St. Vincent’s Hospital. A friend dropped me off (my water broke), and I walked up to the maternity room, and presented myself. I told the nurse at the desk that I was ready to have my baby. She looked around, and wanted to know who was with me. I told her “nobody”. She was very sweet, and also very upset. Evidently that didn’t happen very often. But it couldn’t be helped. Daddy and Aunt Lucille were down at the lake. Dean (Jeannette’s mother, who dropped me off, had to hurry back home and take care of her own little baby.) Jeannette had Dean to take care of. Jeannette’s mother and her had baby’s just six weeks apart.
No matter. Three hours later….Beth made her appearance. All rosy and beautiful and healthy. A headful of black hair, just as cute as a little button. The two of us were very comfortable there in the hospital all alone together. We didn’t care if nobody was there.
We had each other.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY PRECIOUS DAUGHTER!!!

I remember when you brought her home. We were living in Elyton Village. Pop escorted you & Bethy Boo through the door. I remember thinking… “Another sister? That’s just GREAT!” But she was so much calmer than Lainie and didn’t boss anyone around! (Until Tony came along… that’s another sibling chain of command story all together). Between the Rocking Chair and the Teddy Bear she always seemed to find her happy place without having to tear all over the house looking for one like her 3 older sibs.

You were very young to remember that, Bud. You were only Three years and two months old. And to have thought that it was GREAT to have another sister. After being bullied by Bill all of your life, you probably were glad to just have sisters. At that time Bill was five years and five months old, and Lainie was 22 months old. She took one look at Beth in the little bassinet, and went over to me and backed up between my legs, and it was obvious that she wasn’t too pleased about having any competition. She was the baby, and she wanted to leave it that way.

I guess there are things we just don’t think about until our mind is jiggled, Lainie. I haven’t thought about that, either, until Bud mentioned the “homecoming”. Alex sent me a DVD that Meghan copied from those old films that Johnnie got hold of years ago, and gave me a videotape that she copied from the films. I don’t know how many of you saw those films. One of them was me coming home with Beth to Elyton Village. It had faded something awful. Those films had been exposed over the years and were badly faded. Years and years ago, when Pop set up the old movie screen one day, and ran the films that he had kept on an old movie projector, they were so clear and good. But they had been tossed around and left exposed. However, I’m going to get permission from Alex to take the DVD to Birmingham with me on our trip in the Spring. I didn’t know about some of the stuff of it. For instance, I don’t know who took the movies of our 1992 Family Reunion at Ramada Inn. And also a little footage at the 1993 reunion at Twin Pines, but only of the old folks. At the 1992 Reunion, the cutest part (the other is very dull and boring) was Buddy singing, “itsy, bitsy spider”, and there is Crystal and Leah and Hillary singing with him (sorta’), and Crystal playing her violin. And Buddy also sings a ballad! How young and thin you are, Bud!
I wish the camera had gone around the room and STAYED put on some people, but it didn’t. Whoever was filming just bounced it wildly around the room, so you didn’t get to see much. And so many lost opportunities at Twin Pines.
Then there is Christmas at Alex’s house, but that’s only interesting for a moment or two, long enough to see Erin and Meghan and how young they were.
I’m Sure Alex won’t mind if I bring it, and we can have a “showing” at Beth’s house if everybody is interested. LAINIE, you won’t be there!!!! It will probably be the first week of April.

I don’t remember coming home at all. Oh well, I’m just happy Lainie didn’t sock me in the bassinet.
Thank you for sharing your memories! I love you all very much!
