Ike’s Strike (But We’re All Right)
September 13, 2008 | Check-in
Okay, that was a lot of fun.
Ike came ashore at Galveston around midnight, and by 3:00 in the morning things were getting really interesting up here. Power went out at 3:15 AM. The noise just from the wind was unbelievable. I know we got hurricane-force winds here but I don’t know the official windspeed for our area.
We lost a lot of shingles off the roof – along with most of our neighbors. Small Live Oak tree next door was pushed over, and our trampoline (which I had “U-Bolted” to the ground at eight points) flipped over the fence and ended in that neighbor’s backyard.
The fence between us and the neighbor on the other side is completely gone – unfortunate since they have a pit bull (yeah, they’re THAT kind). I’ve got some blue tarps that I’m gonna put up on the roof over our bedroom and the adjacent space on the west (front) side of our house. The roof leaked there and the ceiling is pretty torn up, I had to put plastic cartons under it overnight (”drip, drip, drip…”)
The power came back on around 4:00 this afternoon.
All in all, we came out okay. More than 20,000 people stayed on Galveston Island, we’re waiting to hear the death toll (everyone’s sure there had to be some deaths with the size of the storm surge).
I’ll let y’all know if anything else comes up.
Love to all who’ve asked and prayed.

Glad to hear everything is relatively okay. be careful climbing on that roof! more deaths probably happen in the weeks after the storm than during.

Thank goodness that’s over. At least it’s passed by you, if not over. The damage must be extensive. We’ll be checking in on the weather channel to see what happened. Glad you got by with a few scratches, and I sure do hope they penned that bull dog up tight somewhere. I will never understand why anybody wants those dogs for PETS! It wouldn’t be very Christlike to kill all of those animals, but they could be ……any suggestions anybody??

I liked your poetry with Ike. Let me do one:
While all of you
Hovered in fear of Ike.
Some mean boys in our neighborhood
stole little Hannah’s Bike.
It’s true. Made me so angry. Yesterday, two boys, about 14 years old, knocked on the door, and they were sweaty and hot, and they asked us for some bottles of water. Not any of the menfolks were here (that would be Jason and Luis) or it wouldn’t have happened. Just me, Jordan, Jani, Teyla, and our neighbor (Hannah..12) were in the house at the time. Hannah’s bike was parked in the driveway. (NEVER PARK A BIKE IN THE DRIVEWAY). And if Luis or Jason had been here they would have given them some water, and then followed them out to the street and watched them leave. Luis has had that prank pulled before, and he said they do that and case the joint. They
saw nobody around when we closed the door, and they quickly made off with the bike. Poor little kid. We were so upset. Jason is good friends with a cop here, and he went out looking all over the neighborhood right away, but of course, those kids know how to hide bikes.
