Ike’s Hike
September 12, 2008 | Check-in
At this point, the eye of Hurricane Ike is projected to pass just east of downtown Houston by dawn tomorrow, at which time it will be a Category 1.
It’s projected to hit Galveston as a Category 2 - NOT a major hurricane, but certainly an inconvenience.
Amaya has decided that if she gets scared, we’ll all huddle with flashlights in Nana and Paw-Paw’s room, and tell scary stories.
Go figure.
Stay tuned.

Friday 6:30 PM CDT
Winds are well up into the “tropical storm” force now, and we’re starting to hear it. Oddly enough, no rain yet.
Would you believe it? FORTY PERCENT of the residents of Galveston Island did NOT evacuate and are staying. Some people are going to be killed; the storm surge is expected to be 15-20 feet with 10 to 20 foot waves on top of that! It’s to the point now where no rescue is possible because boats and of course aircraft can’t operate. They had a small warehouse burn down in Galveston because the streets around it were flooded and no fire fighters could get to the area.
I see by the Weather Underground charts that we have about a 50-50 chance of seeing hurricane-force winds (72 mph+) where we are. And a spokesman for the biggest power company here (we have several) stated that they expect power outages “for weeks” throughout the area.
After the storm passes, we’ll decide what to do, but we may go up to Birmingham to stay with Beth for awhile. Beth, hope you don’t have company for dinner like we talked about last weekend!
Pray for us.

I think you’re going to get a lot of wind and rain, and you’d better be thinking up some scary stories.

Or jokes, right Bud?
My biggest concern is power outage. The Weather Channel says that the power outage will be “widespread and long-term.” What the heck does that mean? How long?
I have a small generator on standby but I don’t know what good it’s going to do if the power’s out for three weeks. I think we’re going to look into getting a natural gas “standby generator” in the future. Expensive, but may be worth it!
Algore thinks this is from “manmade global warming,” but what he doesn’t know is, it’s not from use of fossil fuels but from the wickedness of people like him and the Democrats.

Bill, Beth is bedridden, and facing surgery next Thursday. She’s in no condition for company. She told me tonight that she has to cancel out on everyone for Thanksgiving, because her recovery is going to be very slow. She’s only on Lortab now, but the pain is excruciating if she moves very far off the bed.
You may have to come to Florida, and sleep on our sofas and on our floors. Boy!! Will that be some excitement, with Jani due to have her baby anytime between now and October the 1st!!
Jordan is sleeping in a small corner of the diningroom.
We can blow up a mattress for you and Nancy in the living-room, and Amaya can sleep on the sofa in the LR with you, and the boys can sleep on the sofa and floor in the den. You know, it will be noisy and miserable, but AT LEAST, WE’LL BE COOL. I’m assuming that the schools will be closed, so the kids and Nancy won’t be missing anything for the duration of the time that the power is down.
Or, you can go to Birmingham, and stay with Lainie and Buddy. Maybe your Dad will put you up in a motel in Houston. That’s wishful thinking. But if you’re out of power for any length of time, you’re going to have to come up with a plan of some sort, and quick, inamuch as you already hear the wind picking up!!

It 7:50 our time in birmingham. Looking at the map of the storm, it looks like its right over Katy. At this point I am sure you don’t have power and can’t access the internet, but if anyone knows how bill is doing. post it here.

UPDATE ON BETH: She’s not doing the surgery. She feels good enough to think she’s on the mend.
