New Grandbaby
August 28, 2008 | Items of Interest
Ben and Julie know the gender (sex?) of their baby. I thought Ben posted it, but guess not. I’ll leave that for one of them to announce, and let all of you stew until they do. Meanwhile, i’m trying to find out about Beth.
Phone is busy.

Hey, Mom: Specifically “gender” is a term used in grammar. E.g. “the pronoun ’she’ is of gender ‘feminine’”. It’s a category, in other words.
I’m not sure when it began to be used as a synonym for “sex,” but I suppose it was in the 1960s when “sex” began to be limited to define only to the act of procreation (hah!)
The Church’s 1995 Proclamation on the Family does use the word “gender” to denote “male or female sex,” and I’m sure they went over the wording quite thoroughly. So I suppose “gender” is now an accepted synonym.
