AFTER ALL, WHO KNOWS BETTER THAN MORTICIANS THE IMPORTANCE
OF HAVING A LITTLE FUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

Hey, Lainie: Remember the little fat kid in MonroevilleLuverne, AL, who told you “Today’s Fun Day?”

You have to tell that story.

  3. I think ‘Fun Day’ is in Luverne, AL.
On the way to Panama City.

  5. Bud: How the heck do you remember stuff like that? I don’t know where “Luverne” is!

Lainie: It was DAD who made such a big deal about it. Buddy and I didn’t see the kid, but Dad witnessed the whole exchange and related it to us, that was what was funny!

For those looking on in puzzlement: Once when we were kids, we were traveling with Dad (Polhemus) in his motorhome (Buddy says we were going to Panama City). As we were passing through one of the many small towns on the way, Lainie, who was sitting in the front passenger seat (Buddy and I were usually playing cards or whatever in the back), noticed all sorts of balloons and banners festooning the place. She saw a little fat boy with a balloon in one hand and ice cream cone in the other, standing on the side of the street at the stoplight, and she called to him out the window: “Hey, kid, what’s going on around here?”

The kid, who reminded Dad of “Pugsley” on the old Addams Family TV show, deadpanned, with absolutely no expression in his voice, no smile on his face, just a completely neutral affect: “Today’s ‘fun day’.”

Dad thought that was hilarious! From then on, whenever we were going somewhere “fun,” he’d deadpan “today’s fun day…”

Okay, you had to be there.
