Old friends
April 21, 2008 | Uncategorized
I was working today and customers were coming at me from everyside asking questions and this one guy was asking me about some Organic stuff and I wasn’t looking at him because I was doing 5 things at once and then he said something flirtatious and I turned and looked at him and had to look twice and then I lifted my sunglasses and it was an old boyfriend I dated at age 22 and then again at age 33, so it had been another 14 years since I had seen him. Its kind of funny because I have run into old boyfriends before and even though they now have a few more gray hairs (or less hair) and a few more wrinkles , when I talk to them its like we were back age 20 again and they flirt like their still 20 as well, and I look past their wrinkles and they still seem 20 to me. The guy I ran into today is 51. If I talked to another guy 51 that I didn’t know well he would seem old to me. Does that make since? Anyway, its always nice to see old friends that you were fond of. I just hate I am fatter every time I see them

Well, Lainie, you’re going to be 47 in just a few days. And you’re beautiful for someone that age. So, you’re a little “fatter”. The word would probably be that you’re slightly “overweight”. But I’ll bet if you lined up all of the people that were in your class, and the class in front of you and behind you….over 2/3rds of them would be overweight.
It’s so difficult in our way of life now to keep the pounds off. We do a lot sitting and a lot of eating the wrong things. I have developed my huge appetite again, and I’m going nuts trying to stay out of the kitchen.
Anyway, you didn’t tell us if he recognized you, or did you talk to him at all? Was he married? I guess you did, because you said it was nice to see old friends.
You’re a pretty woman, and when you put on your makeup, and dress up, you’re just beautiful. And that’s not just a mother talking. It’s a fact. Did you take your album with you after Christmas? I don’t remember. Anyway. those photos of you tell the tale. You never really looked at yourself and saw the beautiful woman that you were and are.

I’m glad that Poppy lived long enough to see you grow up.

Yes, that is why I looked at him, when I looked at him twice and then pulled down my sunglasses and looked him in the eyes , he said “I wondered If you would recognize me”. Yes, we talked , he has no kids and he didn’t have on a wedding ring and he had the cute personality that he always had. That is the funny thing about when I always run into old boyfriends, they always have the cute personalty that attracted me to begin with. I asked him about kids (he has none), but not if he was married. He flirted as usual, and was as sweet as always. I know Mom, you had alot of boyfriends when you were young. Yes, everytime I run into old boyfriends they always have that cute personality that attracted me to begin with.

Barry is his name, the first time I saw him I worked at Darryl’s restaurant with Buddy, and I remember I was 22 , he was 25 and I looked over at the bar and he was just so cute! He was 6′4″ and talking to everyone. So we dated for awhile. Then after Joe and I divorced I ran into him again 10 years later and he owned a construction business and spearfished on the side, so we would go to his lakehouse at Smith Lake and eat the Lobster and snapper and all the fish he would spear. So, he told me yesterday that he still owned his construction business and he was growing a vegtable garden at his house and he wanted to go “green” so he wanted organic stuff for his garden. So I showed him the best Organic stuff to use. The cashier is the one that noticed he didn’t have a ring on. She had been flirting with him before she found out he and I were old friends. She thinks he will come back but I am transferring to another store by my house shortly. The point is , everytime I run into old boyfriends it reminds me why I liked them anyway, it is really not their looks, it is there cute personalities.

You pricked my memory about guys with cute personalities. Just before my family moved to Panama City, Florida, and my destiny changed forever, i had started dating a boyfriend that had been my steady beau for one year. i was fourteen, and he was sixteen. We broke up one year later. I wore his fraternity pin. His family was very wealthy, and he sported around in a brand new 1951 Chevrolet. We went everywhere. Bowling, to drive-ins, picnics, parties, downtown movies, and just had a wonderful time. He played in the band, and I sat close by at the football games, while he tooted on his trumpet. He was the FUNNIEST guy I ever knew. He made everybody laugh with his cornball antics. He talked like Jerry Lewis. He would put his arms around me, and like Jerry Lewis, would say, “Let’s play smackey-mouf!” Of course, I pushed him away, and told him to stop it, and shut up, and stop being so crazy, etc. etc. We were just kids.
But we did break up,and started dating other people, and a year later, we started dating again. He was a student at Georgia Tech. then. But his future was set. He would take over from his Dad, when he retired as the president of the Georgia Loan and Trust Company in Macon. And that’s what happened. Bill married a woman named Laura. Very much overweight, but extremely cheerful and lovely and likable. They had one little girl. He retired a millionaire to Jekyll Island. He LOVED that island.
If I had not moved, I may have continued dating Bill…and, who knows??? I don’t know why we didn’t keep in touch. I really don’t. I had more fun with him than any guy I ever dated, including your father.
