Phones??

March 25, 2008 | Reunion 2008 | Comments [6]

You all might already have been doing this but perhaps some of you should make some phone calls to each other.  It might be easier than posting, and definitely faster.  of course, i guess not cheaper though.  anyway, thanks for all the hard work everyone is doing to research ideas for the reunion.  Just want you to know that everyone else appreciates it!  I love all the ideas – oak mountain, hotels, dinners, activities, etc – and reading you guys talk about it is making me look forward to it more and more.  I’m sure whatever the final concensus is that we will all have fun.

More Reunion stuff

March 25, 2008 | Uncategorized | Comments [3]

OK, I’ll throw in my rough idea for a package though I’m not able to tune the finer details yet.

Apologies to Lainie and Bill, but I’m very wary of the Cabin’s due to the large amount of effort it seems it would take to either a: get/sneak people in. b: coordinate activities from that location. I think the ONLY way I see the cabins working is to make sure everyone can have/share one. I don’t see that happening so I’m not seeing an advantage to cabins.

BUT, I really like all of the activities available in the park. Swimming, boating and fishing especially.

So this is what I propose. again, I’ll have to look up prices etc later:

Dates: July 27 Sun – August 2 Sat

We all stay (those of us who need to) in a hotel, something reasonably nice with a pool and a conference room. Most Hotels have them specifically for large gatherings.

Sunday – Arriving and settling in. Dinner together depending on opportunities and arrangement ie: availability of kitchens, etc etc.

Monday – Beach/Park fun! Dinner at Brenda’s

Tuesday – Talent Show at Civic Center/Local church building (whatever works). Dinner at Beth’s

Wednesday – Pagan/Polhemus softball game – winner take all! Dinner at Buddy’s!

Thursday – Free day. Revisit the park. Rest, relax, enjoy somebodies company. Dinner at restaurant – preferably buffet ;)

Friday – Pagan/Polhemus slide show/lunch in conference room followed by “My favorite memories” presentation by Pagan/Polhemus kids plus anyone else who would like to say something. Final words by Elaine and Luis M. Pagan.

Friday Evening: free time together. Provide own dinner.

Saturday: Pack up and leave as you will. Final goodbyes.

That is a ROUGH idea of what I think would work. Breakfast’s are usually provided at Holiday Inn’s and other similiar Hotels. Lunches would have to be taken care of individually or helped out by those local family members who might be willing to help.

Dinner’s I think we would want to spend together and I apologize for volunteering Brenda, Beth and Buddy but it would help to keep cost down and split the responsibility. It is, of course, not written in stone.

Somebody would have to follow up and figure out details like the catered lunch, restaurant and softball field. Some calls around would help us determine prices and availability.

Without having figures, I would give, loosely, a rough estimate of around $500 each to cover food, hotel and activities from each of us – 9 children/mom & dad. That doesn’t include gas.

That would provide $5,000 dollars to make this happen. If we can all agree on the schedule of events we could a: give the money to Beth/Brenda and help them arrange everything or b: use our own money as needed (considering the variable number of children we all have ie: Maria’s personnel expense will be less than mine since she’s barren ;) hee-hee) but providing funds ahead of time for dinners provided by family members (come up with menu and prices).

Tweek this a little as needed. If we’re agreed on the date, the next thing to do is get as solid a count as possible on who’s coming. Mom, call Tony and find out if he’s willing to commit. Chris and his wife? Alex and his family? etc etc.

Those are my thoughts. Though I’ll go with what works.

I want to cancel this

March 24, 2008 | Reunion 2008 | Comments [4]

excuse me, but I didn’t even mean to start this, and can’t get out of it.  Oh well since it’s started I will address it instead to BEN

No, Ben, you are not being negative at all.  We have only begun to think of what we should do.  Dad wanted to grab those cabins in case we let them slip, and then were sorry. We have plenty of time to cancel.  They will sleep seven very comfortably.  That’s 21 in three cabins.  We were thinking maybe you and Julie, who might like to retire, tired at night with small children, could go to a pretty cabin with lots of room, and put the babies down.  A lot roomier than a motel room.  Or an RV.  I’m still set on having three cabins.  Bill and Nancy with their three rambunctious children may like to retire at night with their three kiddies to a cabin, also, and put their little ones down to sleep.  As for the third cabin, would some of you like Jason, and Carmen, and Teyla, and Jordan, and somebody else like to have it????

Now that I mention Bud….How about you and your four children and Melissa and another favorite cousin take it???

Just asking-It’s probably being rented, even as I type

Okay Benny here is my draft

https://www.cruiseamerica.com/rent/rentFrame.aspx?ddlLocations=AL&ddlLocationsForCity=AL%2CLOCBIR%2CCONu&start_date=07%2F28%2F2008&pickup_time=DEFAULT&end_date=07%2F31%2F2008&return_time=DEFAULT&HotDealsCode=&allOptions=&pickup_state=AL&pickup_loc=BIR&pickup_date=07%2F28%2F08&return_date=07%2F31%2F08&show_rates=1&res_vend_no=<d_avail_phone_no=800-671-8042&block_down=&block_return=1&x=73&y=19

Okay, my idea is to rent RV’s and stay at the campground because you are not allowed at the cabins if you aren’t renting one. If you will click on my map of the campground you will see that there is a “pavillion” there for cookout, playground, store, extra bathrooms, beach , hiking trails. There is a place in Gardendale that has the best rateson RV’s (Trust me, I checked around). They have 3 standard which holds 5 people = 15, 4 Large which holds 7 = 28. I counted 54 people so that leaves 12 so that means 2 tents. The total cost including sewage, water, and tent site fees (only $10) per night, and if we call Dave Hughes and say it is for the Polhemus/Pagan reunion is  $64.00 per person for 3 nights. It has to be Monday 28 to Thursday the 31 though. that puts everyone together in one spot and of course there is fishing, paddle boating, swimming, etc. , petting farm, horseback riding. So that is my package Benny. Click on the site above to see pictures of the RV’s. Oh yes, Dave Hughes number is 1-800-327-7799. I cancelled all my other reservations. I suggest you really study that campground map.

Slow Down

March 24, 2008 | Uncategorized | Comments [1]

I hate to be the doody in the pool, but I think things are moving a little too fast. If I understand correctly, there are only three cabins available each with a capacity of 6 people. That’s only 18 people that can stay in the park.

Aren’t we looking at possible over 50 people.

I don’t know about anybody else, but I wanted to stay in a place where EVERYONE could gather together, not have to split up later that night or drive in to meet everyone else in the morning etc etc.

the Cabins look great but they limit us on what we can do.

I suggest that Laine or Brenda or Beth or whoever, I’ll volunteer but am limited on what I can plan, puts together 2 or 3 SUGGESTED packaged ideas about where, what and when the reunion would involve, something that describes cost, location, available activities and perhaps a rough itenerary.

I think the time, last week in July sounds good for everyone, but I would really urge it be someplace where we can ALL be.

If folks want to rush on this because it’s the first thing that looks concrete then I guess that’s fine, but we won’t have a chance to do something like this again probably for a long while, let’s make sure we’re setting it up to be a big success.

I don’t intend that to be a negative comment on Lainie’s or anyone else’s effort so I apologize if it is. The end of July is 4 months away, I think we can come up with something more… planned by then.

Just my thoughts.

DAD SECURED TWO OF OAK MOUNTAIN CABINS

March 24, 2008 | Uncategorized | Comments [2]

We couldn’t get weekends.  They are all booked through the summer.  We have two cabins for July 27th, Sunday, Check in at 4:00 PM, and We have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday all day, and then four nights.  We will check out on Thursday morning by 11:00.

BILL…NANCY….HURRY AND CALL…dad took it upon himself to secure one of the cabins for you.  There were only three left.  Now there is only one left.

BEN….JULIE….LAINIE…Maria…Some of you get together quick with a decent Credit Card and get that cabin if you want it.  Uncle Alex may get it, though it isn’t likely.  His family may not be able to get off work.  He and Lorri may come alone and get a motel close by, but they are most definitely coming.  The two of them.

We rented them for close to $300.   They have a sitting room, kitchen, king-sized bed, two double beds.   You can see for yourself.  Go to www.alapark.com/parks/

Lainie..A tent is Ok if you like camping.  Ugh!  That was my objection.

Reunion Information

March 24, 2008 | Uncategorized | No Comments

I went to Oak Mountain today and gathered alot of information and took alot of pictures. I went to a bunch of motels and also the Pelham Civic center. Let me upload my pictures and go over all the information and then I will get back on and give this information to you. I can tell you that no cabins are to be had. Their are ten in the Cabin area (I took pictures) but their are 28 families who rent them out every year. You have to call 1 year a head . The campground has alot of RV’s but their were some tents and it wasn’t that primitive. Others can come and visit there where they couldn’t where the cabins were. Each campsite has a picnic table and a grill , an area for your  tent or RV, and a long wall for people to sit on. There is a beach there as well. I am probably going to reserve a spot there and buy a huge tent. I know Casey, probably Chelsea , maybe Maria and some more may want to stay there. There are public restrooms at the campsite as well. I will check into how much it is to rent an RV. I have the number for the Pelham civic center to call this lady. Like I said, let me look at all this information and upload my photos and I will get back. If you want me to plan the reunion I can. Beth and Brenda are busy and I have no life, and I am on here everyday.

NANCY – MARIA-Ben and Julie

March 23, 2008 | Uncategorized | Comments [2]

Nancy….Talk to Lainie about a cabin at Oak Mountain.  She has her heart set on staying for a few days in a cabin there…..and it sounds great for the kids – lots of things to do.   Luis checked, and so did Crystal.  The cabins are air-conditioned, have kitchens and bathrooms, and the biggest one will occupy six people:  A king-sized bed, and three bunks. I think that’s what Luis said.

Maria….Are you interested in staying in a cabin….or do you like the idea of a motel?

Ben and Julie…..We need to know if the last week in July is OK with you in Bham.  Everyone else has said YES.  Would you like a cabin at Oak Mountain or a Motel?  You will probably need more information.  Right?  We all do.  We’re still not too organized.  When we decide on EXACT DATES – and where each person wants to stay….then Beth and Brenda will plan the activities.  Lots of them will be obvious.

Remember…vote for Jason

Please Vote for Jason

March 23, 2008 | Uncategorized | No Comments

Please go to the link he has posted, and vote for him, and get as many people as you can possibly get, within your time limit, which I know isn’t much, to put in their vote also.
This means so much to Jason.

He and Mia, the young woman who played Mary in the Pageant that you see there, if you look at all of the links, sang a duet today in Sacrament.  Some of you who are old enough. That would be Bill and Buddy, perhaps, may remember Elder Hartman Rector coming to our ward several times and singing the song, “Nation’s Fall Behind Him, River’s Crawl to Find Him, Mountain’s Move Just to Let Him Through,”etc. (and I can’t think of the name)  Elder Rector didn’t have a good voice, but he insisted on singing it without any accompaniment.

It has been a very long day, and Teyla has been up since early, early morning, when she discovered her “basket”, and I heard her exclamations of joy, and I jumped out of bed to see what the excitement was all about.  “Look, Look, Nana!  The Easter Bunny really came.  Look!”

No, wait.  That isn’t what happened.  Carmen came in really early and woke me up because she forgot to get the things from our closet for the baskets, and they were stored in our closet.  She woke Luis up, too.  Now the story is straight, I think.  I don’t know, because I’m just as sleepy as Teyla.

I had just dozed off for a nice little nap, when Beth woke me up .  That’s OK, Beth.

Of course, by the time my voice cleared, and I got back to you, your boys were surrounding you like two (no, ten) wild indians, and we didn’t get to talk very long.

However, God is in His heaven, and all is right with the world.  Except that Hillary, Obama or McCain will be the next president of the United States of America.  Well.  God still rules the Universe.  Not them.

update on reunion

March 23, 2008 | Uncategorized | Comments [7]

Bill and Carmen say that last week in July is fine with them.

Thank you Bill, I finally read your comments this morning.  I didn’t see them last night.

I also see that Nancy has been checking up on Oak Mountain.

Lainie, i have no objection at all to Oak Mountain Cabins IF THEY HAVE AIR CONDITIONING.  That’s the only objection.

Also, motels have pools, and of course the cool rooms……and TV….if you really want to waste your time with that, but it might be better to get away from the TV.  A place where we can’t have it, so we can occupy our time with other pursuits, like CONVERSATION, or actually paying attention to the children, and playing with them.  i remember the last time i took Ben and Maria to Oak Mountain swimming.  I think I could dig up a photograph.  It was fun.  There was a little beach, but the sand was old yellow course stuff.  However, I found out later that there was a beach with fluffy white sand, and I actually SAW IT where people that resided in cabins had access to.  That was only 24 years ago.

Yipes!  Time to dress for church.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!! WE LOVE YOU!

I ordered all the kids in my class the picture book scriptures of “The New Testament” stories for Easter, and they still had not come in when I left for work yesterday, but when I came home last night they had arrived, just in time. I hope they like them. Remember Mom, you had the “Book of Mormon” stories in pictures before. I have that one but wanted to get them this one because of Easter.
