reunion update

March 26, 2008 | Uncategorized

ok, this is one I found that is very nice, we could all be together, it has chalets, cabins both are air conditioned, full kitchens, etc. it has a olympic size swimming pool, fishing, trails, picnic area (pavillions) we could rent for picnics, nice playground for the kids and it is so pretty, it is called desota resort state park in fort payne, al, about 1 hour away from birmingham, I am sure you all know about fort payne, (home of the group alabama) anyway, I called this morning, the nice country lady said she has enough 8 cabins and chalets available for sunday the 27th through check out on saturday, she has 11 available if we all leave on thursday, but I think we are all leaving on saturday or friday (whenever) but there is also, at the lodge area a hotel if anybody wants smaller and its cheaper, these cabins and chalets are not all that expensive. go to alapark.com, click on state directory on top left and on right go to #9 Desoto state park, it gives you pictures of everything. Let me know if this suffices with everybody, if not I will keep looking, I believe this is everything we are looking for, space for picnics, games, gatherings, swimming, etc, and we can all be together. I know its not in birmingham, mom, but its not that far away from it, there are also things to do in town if anybody wants to. if this is it, I am going to call them back and tell them that we are going to start reserving it. Feed me your comments after you see the site.

  2. oh, yes, you will see it but. at the lodge, basic hotel rooms are $75 a night, cabins are $80 night and chalets are $115 a night. also, beth and I can get the food for at least two picnics, grilling meat, hotdogs, etc. and with the kitchens, each individual can get there own breakfast and lunch food to save money or if you do choose to use the restaurant, also, i will go visit there if we decide to do this and reserve pivillions, etc and set things up.

  3. Wow, great detective work, Brenda!

I vote “yes” if all is as you describe. Even if not it would be great to all be together in the same place. Do we need to start ponying up credit cards?

  4. Well, if everybody agrees, I will call them and tell them that we will start reserving them immediately under the Pagan/Polhemus reunion, But we will all have to reserve right away so they will not be lost. She will hold for me for so long. I agree, I want us all to be in the same place to. I will make a trip up there within the next month (beth also, though she does not know it yet) and make other plans to. I do believe it is a great place.

  5. Thats good Brenda. I was looking this morning as well, I looked at Desoto, I gave it 3 stars. I liked Joe Wheeler Resort better, but they only have 4 cottages available (plenty of Hotel Rooms), these four cottages hold 26 people. I wanted a Hotel room anyway. But maybe we should have everyone check out both places and make a decision. There are cabins available at Joe wheeler as well, but i didn’t call to find out how many of those. Here are the two links of both places http://www.joewheelerstatepark.com/
    and http://www.desotostatepark.com/

  6. I looked at Desoto again, I definately like Joe Wheeler state park ALOT better but Desoto is fine. I am only going to rent a motel room at their lodge so I don’t have to reserve right this minute as Desoto has 30 hotel rooms in their lodge. Desoto also has 16 cottages so its a miracle you found that many available. Make sure you let everyone know the cottages at desoto hold 4 people and are $80 a night and the chalets are $115 a night and hold 4.

  7. I called about Joe Wheeler cabins and they had tons of those available for up to 60 people or more.

  8. Well, you guys decide what you would like to do, I looked at the Joe Wheeler sight, looks to be farther away and I did not see anything for the kids to do, playground? unless I missed it. I only saw one picnic area, Desoto has 3 or 4 can’t remember. Looks a little expensive to, but I guess if people bunk together it would be cheaper. it does have golf, if anybody other then Darrell like golf, he would be in hog heaven. although, desoto does have 2 other meeting rooms. everybody needs to just let me know the vote, I will count and majority wins. problem solved.

  9. Yes I think your probably right. It would be closer for those in Florida coming up to go to Desoto. Only Ben would be closer to the other, and your right, I didn’t see a playground and I think we probably would come off cheaper going to desoto. I think Desoto is a great choice.

  10. DAD and I vote for Desoto. Please go ahead and reserve, as far as we are concerned. What say all the rest of you, and hurry up with it. We need to finalize this quickly, so that all of the nitty-gritty can be put in place perfectly. It sounds like somewhere will be space to put up the photographs that I’m determined to hang up for everybody’s enjoyment.

    Great work, Brenda.

  12. yes, after I took a closer look at Desoto, I did like it better. It also has a softball field by the picnic area for that game Ben said he wanted to get beat at. I looked at both parks on Google maps from the air and Desoto was much prettier. So I vote Desoto. I am going to reserve a double bed, motel room for July 27 – Aug. 2. Hopefully, Casey and whoever else can stay there if they need to. I am not banking on Bailey, but you never know. Even if I can’t stay but a few days, the room will be reserved the whole time for anyone.

  13. Lainie, How much would the motel room cost you for that length of time? If you stayed in a Chalet with us, and put up $200.00 for you and Casey, and we could get somebody else to put up $200.00…Anyway, look at my little sketch I’m sure you would be paying more than $32.30 per night at a motel.
