“Golden Compass”

I had heard this was a pretty atheist movie.  I hadn’t planned to watch it, however, in my sunday school class today one of my kids said he went , and then of course another child said “Oh, no! that’s a bad movie, you shouldn’t have watched that” (the second comment came from Cameron and Bobbi Hyde’s daughter Madeline. :)

  2. Wow Lainie, even Snopes concurs with the trilogy itself as being highly atheist!

  3. Well, it’s not so much that it’s “overtly atheist,” but the author who is atheist (or more properly “anti-theist”) wrote the books as a sort of response to the Narnia works of C. S. Lewis. You’d have to know quite a lot of background before you could identify the “atheist” message in it. The notion that it would “brainwash” some kid into atheism is about as absurd as the claims that the Harry Potter movies would turn kids into Satanists.

I think you ought to judge the film on its merits – which apparently aren’t all that great as it’s not doing well at the box office.

  4. I read the books earlier this year and we watched the movie Saturday. Perhaps I am not saying much for myself, but I didn’t catch the ‘anti-God’ undertone. Perhaps if I didn’t, kids may not either. Anyway…I said more in another post and accidently deleted it. hate to repeat myself.
